Tentative Agreement reached

After 18 long months the AREA negotiations team and ARUSD have reached a tentative agreement.
Your bargaining team would like to thank you for the support you have shown over the last 18 months.
AREA will be holding a General Informational zoom meeting on Monday June 2nd at 3:30 PM to discuss the 8 wins in this Tentative Agreement.
Highlights of the 8 wins are:

  1. In Article 10 - Class Size - Instrumental band and choir now can accept students without limiting class size as to allow for more voices and instruments to be heard.
  2. In Article 10 - Class Size - Students in elementary school will be loaded at the beginning of the year within 1 student in the grade level so classes will be even.
  3. In Article 10 - Class Size - Starting on the 15th instructional day, educators will start getting paid for overages
  4. In Article 16 - Salary - AREA members will get a 1 time off the salary schedule 1% retro payment for the 24-25 school year. This is contingent on the District and AREA creating a sub-committee to explore the option of extending the Kindergarten day.
  5. In Article 16 - Salary - Lower Division Commuity College Early Childhood Education units are now counted without having to gain special permission
  6. In Article 16 - Salary - Step 25 will see an increase to $5889
  7. In Articles 20 & 21 - Extended Year Program and Summer School - both will see an increase to paid prep time. Educators will now get 30 minutes of paid prep for every hour taught
  8. In Article 27 - Catastrophic Leave - AREA will be creating a Catastrophic Leave bank. This will help ensure that when something medically unexpected happens to either yourself or defined family, there are days available to you.  It is an opt in bank, meaning you have to contribute a day in order to apply.  This one is a little more complex and I will be able to describe it better over our Zoom meeting

We will be voting on the ratification of this Tentative Agreement,  Thursday and Friday June 5th and 6th via Simply Voting. Anyone employed by the district and an AREA member is allowed to vote in this election.

AREA and district MOU - School closure and consolidation

Dear Fellow Educators,

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible dedication and hard work you've shown throughout this year. Your commitment to your students, your passion for teaching, and your unwavering support of one another have made a profound difference. This year has been challenging in many ways, but your resilience and determination have truly shone through.

I want to reassure you that, although times may be tough, we are in this together. The challenges we face are temporary, and we will persevere. The strength and care you bring to your work each day is inspiring, and it will continue to carry us forward.

Take this well-deserved break to rest, recharge, and reflect. You’ve earned it. When we return, we will face the next chapter with the same perseverance, compassion, and dedication that have gotten us this far.

School Closures / Consolidations forced by Difficult Financial Decisions

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing this evening to address the challenging financial decisions that our school board made this evening which has unfortunately led to the closure and consolidation  of several schools. These decisions have not been made lightly, and over the last 3 weeks numerous meetings,  multiple lists and changes made unexpectedly have caught some schools off guard with the final outcome tonight.
In a 5/0 vote, the school board accepted the Superintendents revised Resolution 26-24/25. This resolution is as follows:

  1. Sylvia Cassell Elementary School - Closure
  2. Donald Meyer Elementary School - Closure
  3. Horace Cureton Elementary School - Closure
  4. A.J. Dorsa Elementary School - Closure
  5. Renaissance Academy at Fischer - School Closure and Consolidation with Renaissance Academy at Mathson
  6. Joseph George Middle School - Closure
  7. Aptitud Academy - Redesign
  8. Hubbard Media Arts Academy - Redesign
  9. L.U.C.H.A.- Consolidation
  10. Ben Painter Elementary School - Consolidation
  11. Cesar Chavez Early Learning Center - Redesign
  12. Adelante Dual Language Academy ( Adelante I) and Adelante II Academy to be consolidated as one school Effective July 1, 2026 and relocated to the former Renaissance at Fischer site.

The Fiscal Plan was also presented to reflect the updated numbers and was approved by the School Board on a 5/0 vote. This plan needed to be submitted by December 16th to prove our efforts for solvency so that we are taken over by the county/state where more school closures and positions could be closed and cut.
In these uncertain times, your Area Executive board recognizes the significant impact that these closures have on our educators, students, and families. Our top priority remains to protect the rights and livelihoods of all educators. AREA is committed to working closely to ensure that the rights of our dedicated staff are upheld and that every possible support is provided during this difficult period.
Your AREA negotiations team is actively working to protect jobs and create a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to ensure the smoothest transition possible. The MOU will outline the timeline, the process agreed upon for selecting your new site and the transition and moving of your materials, to name a few things. We are fully committed to ensuring that everyone is supported through these times of uncertainty.

I understand the anxiety and concerns these closures may bring, and I want to assure you that we will continue to work tirelessly to safeguard the interests of our educators and their rights. We will keep you updated and will be holding an all member zoom meeting after the MOU gets approved to discuss what we will have negotiated to support our association through these closures.

Thank you for your understanding, patience, and unwavering dedication to the education of our students.

Please remember that we need to support and respect each other during this time in solidarity. We will work together to get through this and we will come out stronger... We are AREA Strong!!
